Sparknotes:

Dying to know the mindset of a multi-millionaire who's been crushing the world of success for the last 15 years? Then you’re in the right place! Today I speak with Tysh Mefferd and chat with her about the mindset and actions she’s taken to get where she is today.

In today’s conversation, we begin by discussing Tysh’s initial journey to success:

  • Tysh worked in corporate America for 12 years. The first seven she enjoyed, but the last five she couldn’t help but feel like she was stuck
  • After starting a family, Tysh realized she wanted to be in more control of her work schedule. She decided to follow in her parents’ entrepreneurial shoes and  started a small business on the side in the wedding industry. When they had their second child, she left corporate America behind for good and fully invested her time and energy into her second business.
  • In October 2008, hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast. The Houston economy nosedived, and with it, Tysh’s business.
  • Knowing she needed to pivot, Tysh began looking for short-term solutions to start making money again that would also help alleviate a couple of large monthly bills. She found direct sales and her calling. Tysh was able to serve and help others build what she had as a small business owner, which was having flexibility to work around raising her family.

Tysh generously goes on to share advice on the mindsets and actions she took to get to where she is today:

Through times of uncertainty—such as deciding to leave your job and your small business going under—what pulled you through?

Two realizations helped pull me through. First, when deciding to leave my job, I’d just returned from maternity leave with my second child and had a meeting with my manager. He wanted to talk over my poor sales performance while I was out on maternity leave and how I planned to fix it. The talk was rough, but it gave me crystal clarity on what I did not want to do. Which was to stay in corporate America.

The second thing that helped me pull through was focusing on small goals along the way to build what I truly wanted and celebrating them along the way. Because your goal and your vision of the future can grow from those small wins into something so much bigger.

What advice do you have for someone who is in a low place and can’t see the gift in it (yet)?

Do your best to take a step away from your situation so you can see it with more clarity. Also, you have to start believing in yourself. Life’s too short to be doing something that you don’t love.

We have to be willing to work through the obstacles and challenges that we face because they’re always going to come up. Which means you have to turn around and look at where the opportunities are in the obstacles and overcome them. Oftentimes the plan Bs, or Cs, or even Es are where the magic happens. You just have to be resilient.

How does someone believe in themselves when they haven’t believed in themselves before?

It’s different for everyone, but speaking from my business and industry perspective, when we have people join our team, we try to create small challenges and opportunities for them to experience early success. When they get those experiences, it allows us then to help them start expanding their vision and their belief in themselves.

What would you say to someone who has big dreams and ambitions, but doesn’t have a supportive partner?

Show them what’s possible and that it’s worth your time.

My husband was absolutely against my direct sales business. But I was intent on finding a solution for our money situation, and so I pursued it. There was a juggling of roles that meant my husband taking care of the kids right when he got home from work, while I went and hosted jewelry parties in the evening. It was exhausting, but one evening I came back and told him I made $700 that very night. He perked right up at that and told me I could host my parties as often as I liked.

What are three pieces of advice you would give to yourself back when you were starting out?

1. Take risks, they're worth it.

2. Do your due diligence.

3. Life is too short to be doing something that isn’t bringing you immense joy and impact in your life.

What are three beliefs you operate from each day of your life?

1. Lead by example. Everyday I'm working to help others achieve their success and I know by helping others achieve their success, ultimately, I will hit my bigger goals.

2. Work through the obstacles you have and see the gift in them. Learn from your mistakes.

3. We are deserving of more, and we are capable of more. But no one is going to expect more from us… we have to expect that of ourselves.

And finally, to wrap up our conversation, Tysh shares with us the one insight that radically changed their life!

“Once it hit me that if I went and taught others how to do what I had learned [through my small business] so that they could also be able to pay two bills like me, or whatever it was that they needed in their life. Then that's where the ceiling was removed, and I could go find the ultimate success of my dreams.

The possibilities were limitless.

It’s never been about ‘let me earn thousands and millions of dollars.’ It’s always been, ‘let me go help people make an impact in their lives’, because I know what comes as a result of that for them. As I’ve done that, the other has happened [success].
