Most people go their entire lives operating from a set of beliefs that aren't even theirs. They adopt them from their parents, their peers, and their past experiences, and they don't question them or take the time to break them down. Last week we spoke about the anatomy of beliefs and what causes a belief to form. This week I am going to show you how to take the beliefs you identified as negative and break them down forever.

A quick recap from last session:

  • A belief is like a tabletop. It acquires more and more legs overtime which holds it up and makes it stronger.
  • Beliefs are not facts, they are opinions, a feeling of certainty that you have acquired from a thought pattern.

The Three Ways to Breakdown Limiting Beliefs

1. Doubt

Doubt comes from the logical side of your mind. We can use doubt to break down our limiting beliefs by asking ourselves some simple questions:

Where does the belief come from?

Is it my belief or experience? Or is it someone else's?

Is my belief a fact? Can I prove it? What evidence can I find to prove my belief wrong?

2. Pain

Pain comes from the emotional side of your brain. Tony Robbins references Ebenezer Scrooge and, "A Christmas Carol," to illustrate how pain can play an integral part in the breakdown of limiting beliefs. Ebenezer Scrooge is a grumpy, rude man who believes that the only reason he is successful is because he is mean, when actually the reason he is successful is because he works extremely hard and is a great businessman. In the story he is approached by three neuro associative conditioning specialists who are able to link so much pain to his past, present experiences that he sees no other option but to change. Thinking about the consequences of your beliefs is extremely powerful.

Ask yourself, "If I continue to believe what I do, how will this affect my life in 5 years' time? How about 10 years?"

Now ask yourself,  "If I continue to believe what I do, how will this affect the people in my life?"

3. Vision

The final way to breakdown limiting beliefs is Vision. Once you are able to see the pain your limiting beliefs cause, you need to interrupt the pain and replace it with something empowering - a compelling vision of the future.

Ask yourself, "If I believed the opposite of my limiting beliefs, what would my future look like?"

When you have focus on a compelling vision of the future, you will realize that you don't have time for limiting beliefs anymore.
