As you approach the new year, there is a far more powerful question to set you up for success than, “What are my goals?” and “What do I want 2023 to look like?”. It’s; “Who do I need to surround myself with?”

Why is that question so powerful? Because proximity is one of the most influential forces in your life. Today, I’ll show you how to set up your year to be around the right people so that your goals can happen magically faster!

To begin, let’s start with another question: “What do I value in life?” 

Your answer may be money, family, or career. All are perfectly acceptable answers, but now I want to take it a step further and have you ask yourself, “What emotions would be present in my life if I had that [value]?” That emotion is the true answer to the first question, and by identifying it, you have given yourself the target of where you really want to go in 2023.

Ready for your next question? “What’s preventing you from having that value now?”

The answer(s): limiting beliefs, unique challenges that you’re facing, the meaning you give different situations, and/or influence from other people.

I want to home in on that last answer because it’s one of the most powerful forces in determining whether you achieve your value/target. 

If you think about a big goal, you’re setting for 2023, you’re not setting it for the goal itself. 

Your eulogy isn’t going to list your accomplishments, is it? No! It will be filled with your character, how you lived, the lives you touched, your very way of being. 

The reason you set goals is for the feeling you think they’ll bring. That’s the real target. When you identify those feelings, your next step is to not only evaluate who you need to become and what you need to do, but who you need to be around.

There is power in proximity.

Consider for a moment, what, as a human race, our deepest fear is: that we won’t be loved. Love is a biological need. If a baby isn’t given love at birth, it won’t survive. (It’s called failure to thrive.) 

Knowing that’s our greatest fear, it’s vitally important to examine your peer group before starting to go after your big goals. Because whether you realize it or not, they play a huge role in determining if you’ll achieve them. Why? The fear of losing love is greater than the fear of not achieving your goal. You’ll do more to conform to what your peer group likes than you will to act on a big dream if you felt you’d lose their love.

Here's the truth of the matter: Your life is a direct reflection of your peer group's expectations.

That’s why I’ve always invested a level beyond my economic means to put myself in the rooms where those who have the success I want will be at. Because that’s where the magic happens. That’s where one insight can change the trajectory of your entire career. 

Wondering where these magical rooms exist? It’s simple: live immersive events.

It can be intimidating to place yourself among peers who are playing at a higher level than you, but it also calls on you to be the best version of yourself. You show up in a way you never have before. You start playing ball at a higher level and the result of that is truly life changing.

This is the answer to hitting not only your 2023 goals, but the goals which have evaded you year after year: attending live events where the people play at a level beyond you.
