5 Tips to Gain Mentors (in your field!)
Exposure to a mentor will single-handedly save you years because just one nugget from them can change your entire life.
#) 1: Up Your Confidence (because we ALL deal with insecurities)
Every single one of us…ANY successful person…we all deal with insecurities!
We all deal with insecurities and limiting beliefs that hold us back. But if you have weak confidence, they're not going to want to spend time with you. So, let me ask you…How do you carry yourself around these successful people? Do you get shy and embarrassed?!
Are you confident in your body? Shoulders back and eye contact? Are you breathing fully (expanding your chest)? Do you have a power posture or your power stance?
Are you confident in your mind? What are you focusing on? Do you focus on how you are enough or how you are not enough?
How do you view these mentors? When you up your confidence game, these mentors are going to want to be around you because they're going to feel that you are one of them! I'm curious, do you view these people on a pedestal? Do you see these successful people as out of reach for you? Do you worship the ground they walk on OR do you see them as just another person who happens to be doing some things right and has years of experience?!
#2) Take Them OFF the Pedestal
These are people…not aliens. We all shit…We all eat…We all mess up. Every single person!
They're just normal people further along that are doing some things right and it would benefit you to see what their beliefs and thought processes are. Take them down off the pedestal, so that you can learn from them and earn their respect!
Here are 7 words that will help you take them off the pedestal and change the game forever for you!
“Hi, I’m NAME. Nice to meet you!”
YUP, those are the 7 words and if you use these seven words, it can radically change your life! When you lead your relationship with those seven words, you become equals and then they are more receptive to your thoughts, feelings, statements!
…and then…go from there! “I've been really blown away by the quality of your work and it's so apparent that you have such a heart to impact people's lives. I'm just so impressed with that. What projects are you working on right now?”
Do you think that impression would go further in getting them in your corner?! Massively!
#3) Stop Asking for Things First (add value instead!)
This is so important because what do people do? I get messages all the time… “Hey! Will you give me a one-on-one coaching session for free?!” Of course I want to help, but…what’s your name first?! Every single successful person wants to help. We want to help! But if someone goes in and asks for something first…well, that’s not how it works. You need to add value to them instead!
Put this in your notes: Poor people demand that successful people do things for them. Successful people become successful because they have requested to do things for successful people, so if you want to meet these people, find a way to help them get what they want instead of asking for what you want!
It's called empathy. You must think about what products they're working on, what do they want to create and what can you do to support that? That will get you on their radar.
#4) Be Genuinely Curious
People love to talk about themselves, but more importantly, people love to teach each other how they did it. Successful people want to teach because they live in an abundant mindset. They're not worried about it. For me, there's nothing more exciting to me in business than helping someone who is starting off doing what I'm doing and helping them to become successful! It’s fulfilling to know you played a role in helping people start off on their journey.
This is communication 1-on-1: Ask more than you tell. Be interested, not interesting. Stop trying to get on their radar. Start trying to care about them. Ask them… “What beliefs are instilled in you (that helped you become successful)?... What are the three most important skills you've learned in life?... What have you learned about being a dad?”
What they'll see (instead of a fan girl or boy) is someone who is one fire! Someone who knows that they’re meant for something incredible.
If you don’t ask, the answer will always be ‘no’.
There comes a time when it's okay to ask and it's after you've added massive amounts of value to their life. And when the time has come to ask, ask intelligently.
NOW…I want you to identify who in your business do you tremendously respect as a mentor?! I'm not talking about someone in a different business, but someone in the business you're trying to grow right now. Who do you tremendously respect as a mentor (that’s in your field)?
